The 1,300 sanitation workers who participated in the historic 1968 strike in Memphis, Tennessee -- members of AFSCME Local 1733 -- were enshrined into the U.S. Department of Labor's "Labor Hall of Fame" on April 29, 2011. Eight of the original strikers attended the induction ceremony before a full house in the Grand Hall of the Department of Labor in Washington, D.C. and connected their struggle to modern-day battles that continue to be waged against today's labor movement.

Inductees included Local 1733 members Ben Jones, Baxter Leach, Herbert Parson, Cleophus Smith, Alvin Turner, Ozell Ueal, Russell Walton, and Joe Warren. 

(MEMPHIS 12/20/2010) -- WREG News Channel 3 Commentator Norm Brewer passed away Sunday after a hard fought battle with cancer. Of course, Norm was much more than a commentator. He was a fixture in the field of Journalism in Memphis for six decades. He was a leader, a teacher and a well-respected member of the WREG family.

Norm was a dedicated co-worker. He was tough, but fair. He called it like he saw it, and wasn't afraid to do so, even during tumultuous times.

Long before commenting on Bass Pro, The Pyramid and 21st century Memphis politics and politicians, Norm Brewer made a courageous commentary in 1968. He told a TV audience he supported the sanitation workers efforts in getting a union. If city leaders continued to fight against them, Norm warned they were steering the city down the wrong road.  Click here to read more....
